The
Terell Stafford Quintet featuring Mulgrew Miller
Sunday, September 19, 2004 5 p.m.
Terell Stafford, trumpet
Mulgrew Miller, piano
A gifted and versatile trumpet player, Terell Stafford combines lyricism
and his deep love of melody with a spirited, adventurous edge. The end result
is a uniquely expressive, well-defined musical talent who stands ready to
carry on the rich trumpet tradition established by his predecessors.
Joining Stafford for this concert is Mulgrew Miller, a pianist who has made a
steady career as one of the most in-demand sidemen in jazz today. He has been
a member of the touring group of ten pianists called “100 Gold Fingers” and
is also a member of the Contemporary Piano Ensemble, a group of four pianists
performing simultaneously on four grand pianos backed by a rhythm section.
Dave
Stryker and Blue to the Bone
Sunday, November 14, 2004 5 p.m.
Dave Stryker, guitar
For the second concert of the season Chamber Jazz Society presents this
innovative band which is one of Dave Stryker’s most exciting projects to
date. It features the blues side of Stryker’s guitar playing with a horn
section riffing behind him. Although still coming from a jazz perspective, it
gives Stryker the opportunity to indulge his love of players like B.B. and
Albert King with some different New Orleans and funk rhythms going on
underneath. Throughout it all, Stryker has impressed crtitics with his
ability to improvise without resorting to the conventional or cliché.
The
Dena DeRose Trio
Sunday, February 6, 2005 5 p.m.
Dena DeRose, piano and vocals
“The most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn.”
-Joel E. Siegel, Washington City Paper
“Dena DeRose sings jazz as if she had been at it her whole life long, and
then some. She interprets standards in a deliciously laconic, no-nonsense
manner, accompanying herself on piano with hard-swinging grace.”
-Terry Teachout, The New York Times
Dena DeRose fell in love with jazz in college and began building a career as
a jazz pianist playing anything that she could. An early bout with carpal
tunnel syndrome interrupted her career and for two years she could not play
the piano. During this time, she discovered a new and unexpected talent –
singing. Today, DeRose is considered a rarity, a singer-pianist whose skills
on both instruments are equally compelling.
The
Dave Liebman Quintet
Sunday, March 13, 2005 5 p.m.
Dave Liebman, saxophones
Dave Liebman has been compared to John Coltrane for his ability to get inside
the saxophone and exploit its beauty with an independent voice that has both
depth of emotion and intellect. Whether he is playing soprano or tenor,
Liebman is known throughout the jazz world as one of today’s leading
contemporary voices.
The quintet consists of:
Dave Liebman, saxophones
Vic Juris, guitar
Phil Markowitz, piano
Tony Marino, bass
Marko Marcinko, drums
The
Harold Mabern Trio plus special guest Eric Alexander
Sunday, April 10, 2005 5 p.m.
Harold Mabern, piano
Eric Alexander, tenor saxophone
Audience favorites Harold Mabern and Eric Alexander return for the final
concert of the season when CJS presents its “Jazz Masters” concert featuring
Harold Mabern as the headliner. With a percussive left hand that alternates
between stride and boogie-woogie, Mabern has a love for the classic standards
but always manages to give them a new twist be it harmonic, rhythmic or
melodic. It is this devotion to his art that has endured in a career that has
lasted for over forty years.
Boasting a warm, finely burnished tone and a robust melodic and harmonic
imagination, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander is no stranger to audiences in
Baltimore. One of the brightest stars in jazz today, Alexander has developed
an assured and mature vision with a voice of his own. CJS is thrilled to have
these two artists back for the final concert of the season.
