2005-2006 Performers
The Latin Side of Miles opens the 15th season for Chamber Jazz Society with an Afro-Caribbean slant on the Miles Davis 1959 classic, Kind of Blue, arguably Davis’ finest work. The Grammy nominated album, Another Kind of Blue, draws together musicians known for their expertise in Latin jazz and is a follow-up to the Grammy nominated Latin Side of John Coltrane. Trombonist Conrad Herwig and trumpeter Brian Lynch have made names for themselves as first-call New York sidemen as well as leaders of independent projects. Each is steeped in the Latin jazz tradition, having played in numerous Latin bands including nearly two decades of playing together in Latin music legend Eddie Palmieri’s band. Experience the fresh exploration and rhythmic re-interpretation of the music of one of jazz’s greatest legends.
When you think of hard-driving swing, daring expression, sophistication and elegance in artistry, formidable technique and a thunderous sound, there are only a handful of young pianists you think of and one of them is most assuredly Eric Reed. But don’t think of him as just a pianist; Eric is one of the new generation’s most advanced thinkers in jazz. Joining Reed are two venerable artists in their own right, Buster Williams and Al Foster, and together they promise to make this an evening of grooving and moving and plenty of foot stomping.
Of the great saxophonists of the 1950s and 1960s, one of the best was alto saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley. Possessing an impassioned, soulful sound and an engaging, charismatic personality, Cannonball’s career took off in the late 1950s as a member of Miles Davis’ sextet. In 1959, he reunited with his brother, cornet player Nat Adderley, to form the band that would remain a major success until Cannonball’s sudden death in1975. Straight out of this tradition, Vince Herring and Louis Hayes are the perfect bandleaders to mount a tribute to Cannonball. Drummer Hayes was a member of Cannonball’s quintet from 1959-65 while alto saxophonist Herring was heavily influenced by Adderley in his formative years and also played with Nat’s quintet. Together Hayes, known for his energetic, unrelenting swing, and Herring, a Chamber Jazz audience favorite and a formidable talent in his own right, have amassed some of the hottest jazzmen around to pay tribute to a great master of the saxophone. Sit back while the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band brings a bit of nostalgia back to the present for all to enjoy.
One of the major bop pianists of the last half of the twentieth century, Barry Harris is an internationally renowned performer, composer and teacher. He has received the Living Jazz Legacy award from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Association, and an American Jazz Masters Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. An exponent of the classic jazz style that was developed by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Coleman Hawkins, Harris is known for his blues playing as well as his swing. He is widely recognized as a master clinician and has devoted much of his life to educating and developing future audiences for the music that is his life. Last seen here in 1999, Chamber Jazz Society is honored to present Barry Harris for its Annual Jazz Masters Concert. Premium Concert (Included in Subscription Price)
